Awards vs Prizes
SATO48 has two distinct types of recognition that are often conflated. They are determined by entirely different processes.
Awards
Determined by: Selection Committee scoring → International Judge ranking
Affected by the 2026 SC bug: Yes
Awards are the competitive categories evaluated by the Selection Committee and then narrowed and ranked by International Judges. They represent craft and artistic merit as assessed by external reviewers.
The pipeline: SC Members score films → Top 10 per category go to International Judges → Judges drag-rank 1–10 → Final placements (1st–10th) announced at the Awards Ceremony.
See The SATO48 Festival Process for the full pipeline.
Typical award categories:
- Best Film / Best Use of the Inspiration Package
- Cinematography
- Direction
- Editing
- Lead Performance
- Supporting Performance
- Screenplay
- Sound Design
- Original Score
Prizes
Determined by: Community voting, audience, or sponsor selection — out of band from SC/Judge process
Affected by the 2026 SC bug: No
Prizes are determined independently of the Selection Committee and International Judge pipeline. They are not impacted by anything that happens in those systems.
Prize categories vary year to year. See each year’s Prizes page:
Typical prize categories (vary by year):
- Audience Favorite (live audience voting at Film Screenings)
- Golden Weaver
- Family Film Project
- Nerd Out
- Timeless Style
- You Gotta See It
- Product Placement
- Best Opening / Closing Credits
- Outstanding Movie Set Design
- Poster Design
Prize Sponsors select their own recipients directly and are assigned to film groups of type "prize" in the Festival Manager.
Key Distinction (2026)
When communicating with filmmakers affected by the 2026 Selection Committee Bug:
“Your prize recognition from the ceremony is valid and stands. The bug only affected awards — which is why your film is part of the remediation conversation.”
